Chaucers Use of the Female Gender to Shape His Text with Reference to Wife of Bath With reference to Chaucers Wife of Bath, we can clearly see how Chaucer uses the female gender to shape his text. Chaucer uses the female gender to show the many chacteristics or traits a female may have. He shows this through the tale of the Wife of Bath and the female characters in the tale such as the old women. Chaucer hopes to give us an insight into a womens thought and desires. The Wife of Bath tells the tale of a young knight whom, after the rape of a maiden, must search for the answer to the question, what is it that women most desire? The wife of Bath desires the obvious in life, but what she desires most is being more powerful than her husband. In a relationship, she wants to be the dominant of the two, the one who is in control and takes the decisions in the relationships. This i s shown in her tale when no women in the assembly disagreed with the knights reply (and certainly not the old hag). There is another example of the desire for power of the women in a relationship. The old hag, after marrying the knight, gives him the choice of which women he rather have. The knight leaves the decision up to the old lady and is rewarded. The wife of bath desires to have a husband that is meek, young and fresh in bed. This desire also leads her to become envious of her charters in her tale. The Wife of Bath is jealous of the old hag in her tale because the old lady has the power in the story. However in the wife of baths true life, she didnt always have control in her relationship with her fifth husband. The wife of bath was married five times and is looking for a sixth husband. She used the church as a way to meet men not as a place of worship. Pilgrimage provided her with the opportunity for traveling as well as meeting new people. Reflection Sayed Aasim Qadri I wasn t looking forward to taking English 4U despite the fact that I am a voracious reader and enjoy engaging in discussions surrounding novels that I have read or currently am reading, but conversely, I absolutely abhorred English due to my experiences in high school. Back then, English was a long list of stylistic devices, poetry analysis, and monotonous written assignments. It seemed that we spent so much time learning how to write analytically that it consequently resulted in the loss of being able to write creatively. I recall receiving feedback upon the submission of my first in-class essay and Mr. Warren telling me that my essay was ‘subpar’ and ‘required a lot of refining’ but the thing that†¦show more content†¦My first essay for the CCT, titled â€Å"Alexithymia† is a deconstruction of my personality through the retelling of my struggle to articulately convey my emotions. This was the first creative essay I had written for the course and upon reviewing the original submission of the piece, I knew there was a significant amount of refining needed to be done to ensure the piece was up to par. The piece still remains the most raw form of writing I have been able to incorporate through the CCT sans the use of flashy, and intense literary devices. My second essay for the CCT is the piece I struggled most with. Incorporating â€Å"Showing and Not Telling† into my writing seemed to be the most difficult aspect of the CCT as I had been so accustomed to the idea of â€Å"telling† all my stories rather than â€Å"showing† them. Two American Presidents, both very Influential In their time and both having had a great Impact on history are Ronald Reagan and Woodrow Wilson. Both Presidents were advocates of peace even though they would not have hesitated to enter into a war if war was needed to insure the safety of the united States and Democracy as a whole. With the united States now having a powerful presence in places like Cuba, Puerco Rice, Guam and the Philippines due to Willows use of military force and occupations between 1913-1916 it is as if Wilson has the passion and feelings of Crusader in the days of Chivalry. We look back to the great men who made our government as to a generation, not of revolutionists, but of statesmen. Despite this Wilson was one of the first modern leaders to clearly see the threat an all out war had for civilization at the time while at the same time Wilson excessive actions would get the United States into perilous situations that could provoke a world threatening war. Wilson was a very idealistic yet inflexible but also very righteous in a time when the United States was up against vindictive allies each of whom had an imperialistic view of themselves. It was quite clear that the after the First World War the allies were more concerned with imperialism than the idealism that Wilson wanted to instill with the League of Nations. It was as if they were more interested in squabbling over who should rule what, get what, and gaining reparations from Germany than they were in making the world better for all. The allies as well as the United States resisted the League of Nations with their imperialism and began to think that Wilson had a Messiah complex.Wilson was a righteous pacifist who was not much different from any of the other Presidents who had never considered the third world as anything other than beneath the United States and needing its guidance. During and after World War l, Wilson was expanding the United States presence throughout the world in places like South America and Southeast Asia. His goal was to spread democracy and at the same time establish democracy in opposition of communism. Many people dont look at it like this as Communism was not considered a large threat by many at the time. Wilson However seemed to be a stark opponent of Communism but was definitely an advocate for democracy. There are few Americans who were living at the time that realize or remember that we had a silent war with Russia. This I must admit I only discovered myself in doing some research online and will keep this short as it is not part of the sources. In the summer of 1918 Wilson implemented a Naval Blockade of the Soviet Union and sent forces into Russia to help anti communist forces during the Russian Revolution.Though our support for the Czech and White Russian forces failed, it does show an indication of Willows belief in Democracy as well as an anti-communist agenda which further indicates his defense of democracy and belief that there should be freedom of such for all nations. Anyone that was born before about 1983 will remember Ronald Reagan as the President that brought about an end to major communistic rule in Europe as well as being credited with bringing down the Berlin Wall. Reagan was about as American a President as we have ever had. He had a great love and pride for the United States as well as democracy and he freedoms that we have in this nation. Reagan was a strong opponent to Communism but wanted to make peace with Russia.Professing to be against nuclear weapons he still felt that America should be armed for a war that would hopefully never be fought. In his fight against communism Reagan implemented the program we know as Star Wars which was a space defense system, seemingly to be out of science fiction. In all reality it was more off trick pulled on Russia causing them to spend more money to attempt to build up their military in a way to compete with such technology. It was actions and diplomacy like these that allowed Reagan to keep out of a major conflict while still defeating communism.In his fight against communism the United States aided and trained soldiers in, as well as supplied weapons to Afghanistan which was occupied by Russia in the mid sasss.
